Practicum and internship opportunities for graduate-level clinicians
Clinical employment, supervision, and continued professional development
Completing your practicum or internship is an important academic milestone, but it is also an opportunity to begin discovering who you are as a clinician and to gain meaningful exposure to the mental health field. At Anew, graduate students have the opportunity to learn across a full continuum of care while working alongside a multidisciplinary team that includes psychiatry, psychiatric nursing, and seasoned licensed clinicians from multiple behavioral health disciplines.
Within Anew’s therapeutic community, students gain exposure to complex and diverse clinical presentations while learning how individual, family, group, and milieu-based interventions come together as part of comprehensive treatment. The experience is intended to support both the practical requirements of graduate training and the development of clinical judgment, professional identity, and confidence.
For associate-licensed clinicians beginning or continuing their professional careers, employment at Anew provides an opportunity to continue developing as a clinician while working within a multidisciplinary therapeutic community. Clinicians gain exposure to complex psychiatric presentations, different levels of care, collaborative treatment planning, and the integration of individual, family, group, and milieu-based work. For associate-licensed clinicians working toward independent licensure, employment at Anew can provide both ongoing professional development and clinical supervision while supporting the continued development of clinical judgment, professional identity, and confidence in the field.
Comprehensive and lasting change requires transformation—an internalization of new ideas, perspectives, and life management skills—in order for individuals and families to live with a sense of hope, efficiency, balance, and health.
Oftentimes, individuals and their families become stuck in a vicious cycle of crisis-stabilization-crisis, where day-to-day living becomes one of crisis management and survival. Acute and short-term treatment interventions tend to focus primarily on compliance for immediate symptom stabilization, which is important for safety, however, is not sufficient for the lasting transformation. Opportunity to learn new skills, time to practice and strengthen new perspectives and behaviors, and build/rebuild relationships with healthy patterns are all essential to the process.
The Anew Treatment Center incorporates a sophisticated, staged approach to treatment, rooted in time-tested models of change and transformation. We collaboratively support our clients and their families in navigating the entire journey, from the beginning stages of uncertainty and fear all the way through the integration and application of recovery to all aspects of living. Change and transformation is rarely linear; missteps and surprises are just important and the successes and achievements, and we are here to support you the entire way.

At Anew, we believe that safe, supportive relationships serve as the foundation for deep and lasting change. We also believe that healing and growth is maintained and sustained when change takes place within the individual’s family system.
Within the therapeutic milieu, existing relational distress and interpersonal difficulties can be expressed and safely tended to, creating the opportunity to encounter different, and therefore reparative, social outcomes. Our understanding and supportive therapeutic milieu approach provides an immersive experience that creates space to learn about oneself, change disruptive patterns, practice new interpersonal skills, and ultimately develop healthy, safe, and lasting relationships.
We also believe that the development of independent living skills is facilitated by strong and safe relational attachments. The goal for comprehensive and lasting change is not about behavioral compliance but the internalization of awareness, information, values, and new beliefs that enable an individual to make informed decisions on how to live one’s desired life. Healing past relational injuries and building new, safe, supportive relationships are the foundation for lasting change.
The foundation of the Anew Treatment Center’s distinctive culture is rooted in the bountiful and time-honored legacy of Hanbleceya, a residential therapeutic community established in 1979. For the past 25 years, members of our team have had the remarkable opportunity to train in and preserve a system of care based on belonging, shared responsibility, accountability, and reciprocal support.
We believe in maintaining the fidelity of a culture that has supported the healing and restoration of hope for thousands. At Anew, members of our community will have the extraordinary opportunity to build upon this foundation and be a part of creating a vibrant and welcoming environment that will continue to provide a safe therapeutic space for individuals and families to recover and grow together.
A distinguishing feature of the therapeutic community (TC) model is its intentional use of the community itself as the primary agent for facilitating social and psychological change in individuals. The TC model incorporates social learning theory: learning occurs by identifying with others and through participation, observation, and interaction with others to change thoughts, feelings, and behavior patterns.
The learning and healing experiences that are essential to recovery and personal growth unfold in a social context and through social interactions that facilitate learning about oneself, changing disruptive patterns, and developing the ability to create and maintain healthy interpersonal relationships. Insight into problems is gained through group and individual interaction. Learning through experience, failing, and succeeding, and experiencing the outcomes of one’s actions are considered to be the most potent influence toward achieving lasting change.
The main vehicle for teaching self-development lies in daily activities, community operations, and investment in the welfare of the community. Learning occurs not only through specific skills training but in adhering to structure, accepting support, and offering it when needed. Sharing in the building and maintenance of the welfare of the community bonds peers and creates a collective investment in self, others, and the greater community.
Clinical supervision is an important part of the practicum and internship experience at Anew. Students receive structured supervision and clinical oversight designed to support their development as thoughtful, ethical, and increasingly confident clinicians.
Through supervision, case consultation, feedback, and collaboration with experienced clinicians, students have opportunities to strengthen clinical judgment, explore case conceptualization, develop professional boundaries, navigate ethical considerations, and reflect on their growth as developing clinicians.
Our practicum and internship experiences are best suited for students who are curious, engaged, and ready to take an active role in their clinical development. Because learning at Anew happens within a therapeutic community, we value students who are willing to participate fully, build meaningful relationships, receive and integrate feedback, take responsibility for their growth, and approach clients and colleagues with curiosity, integrity, flexibility, and a genuine belief in people’s capacity for change.
